Research Operations Analyst, Edinburgh

"The best thing is the flexibility for people to develop and fulfill their potential in interesting and unexpected directions."
I joined WoodMac in July 2003. Before that I graduated with a degree in Computing and went on to work in finance for a civil service department. My plan had been to train as an accountant but when I came across the opportunity to work for Wood Mackenzie I felt I could not turn it down.
I initially joined WoodMac as a Data Analyst working in Energy Consulting. I assisted the consultants in collecting, manipulating and delivering data for projects. My knowledge of programming and data manipulation added a new dimension to the team. At the same time, working with many experienced energy professionals made it a great place to learn more about the industry.
My work as a Data Analyst gave me the opportunity collaborate with many people in WoodMac and ultimately led to a move to Gas and Power Research. My new role as a Market Analyst allowed me to expand my skills and experience into areas such as analysis of the Gas and Power industry, optimization modeling, client interaction, and latterly product development and project management.
After 5 years in Gas and Power Research, I moved to my current role in Research Operations. This involves working with our research teams around the globe. I get involved in analyzing how our research products are performing, internal communication, budgeting, and finding ways to improve what we deliver to clients. The best thing about this role is that is gives me the freedom and flexibility to get involved in almost any aspect of the business.
WoodMac is a good place to work, the atmosphere is friendly yet professional and the subject matter is both interesting and incredibly important. But perhaps the best thing is the flexibility for people to develop and fulfill their potential in interesting and unexpected directions.
