"The opportunities are huge for anybody with an open mind and willingness to apply their skills to something different."
I joined Woodmac in January 2005 as an analyst in the Energy Markets team. Previously, I was a Project Engineer for a pipeline contractor, working on large pipeline construction projects in the North Sea and South East Asia. I traveled quite extensively, setting up new plants, coordinating projects and doing some internal best practice work for the engineering group. Our clients included IOCs, NOCs, steel mills and offshore construction companies.
Since joining Wood Mackenzie, I have worked in the Energy Markets team, building up a global energy supply/demand balance. The Energy Markets team looks at all aspects of energy in all parts of the world – not just oil and gas – but coal, nuclear, alternatives, and something very topical these days, carbon.
In addition to the work/life balance that is strongly encouraged, the work itself is extremely fascinating. I have since moved on to lead the Metals Markets group, which performs a similar function to Energy Markets, that is, building a global supply/demand balance for metals such as copper, aluminum, zinc, lead and nickel.
The opportunities are huge for anybody with an open mind and willingness to apply their skills to something different. Because of this, there will be plenty of opportunities to develop new research offerings, leveraging the existing ones in consulting, not to mention going out and selling them to clients!
