"Research is a good place to work if you enjoy developing detailed knowledge of an industry and region, and feeding this into reports, studies, presentations, consulting projects and your own views and opinions."

After graduating in 2002 I took time out to travel, before starting work with Deloitte in London. Having decided to take a different direction, I returned to Edinburgh to join Wood Mackenzie in 2005 as an upstream research analyst, in the South East Asia team. After a year, I chose to move to the Middle East team, rather than accept the offer of a secondment to the new Singapore office.

In four years, I’ve learned a great deal about the upstream industry, through working with colleagues with in-depth industry experience, meeting with oil companies in region and through my own curiosity, and desire to learn. I now have greater responsibility within my team and increasing contact with clients through research trips, consulting projects and client enquiries.

Research is a good place to work if you enjoy developing detailed knowledge of an industry and region, and feeding this into reports, studies, presentations, consulting projects and your own views and opinions. Part of this process is visiting the region to meet with regional contacts, which is both the most challenging and enjoyable part of the role. Working at WoodMac also includes all the things you would expect: training, work/life balance, competitive benefits package, and a good office location in a great city.

Over the next few years I’m focused on developing my knowledge of the Middle East upstream business. It’s a very interesting and important region and this year I’ve widened my remit, by taking a leading role on following developments in Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen, as well as keeping up with Oman and the United Arab Emirates as in previous years. I’ve developed an affinity for the region having visited a number of times now and look forward to more trips in the future.
