Meet Our People
Senior Data Analyst, Edinburgh
Malcolm Dickson
"As I have grown in my role, I have developed a good knowledge of the industry and of my region."
I graduated from Glasgow University in 2000, with a degree in Political Science. After a year of working in financial services, I joined the Scottish Executive, where I worked for two years collating and analysing Scottish Census data. Working with a vast and complex dataset was ideal preparation for the Data Analyst role at Wood Mackenzie, which I began in 2003.
I work in the Upstream Europe team, as a Senior Data Analyst. My day-to-day role revolves around maintaining the integrity of the database. I ensure that it is up-to-date and consistent, particularly for our PathFinder mapping and database product.
The role is varied, and I have to organise and prioritise my own workload on a daily basis. This includes supporting the team's data requirements for their analyses and consulting projects, carrying out mapping work in our GIS tool and contacting clients for data. There are always opportunities to take on larger projects, either within the regional team, or in the wider Upstream team. One project that I have recently been involved in is the expansion of our coverage to include Central and Eastern Europe. The addition of a great deal of data required lots of time and thought from me to ensure that it fits the standards which Wood Mackenzie applies.
As I have grown in my role, I have developed a good knowledge of the industry and of my region. I have taken on more responsibilities, such as liaising with other teams in the company, writing analyses and reports and more client contact. I now chair the WoodMac Data Analyst Forum, which takes place monthly. This involves organising agendas, presenting material, and generating ideas for data improvement throughout the company.
WoodMac is a very sociable company. There are always events on the go, from pub quizzes to sports tournaments. I have been involved with the football side of this since joining and I regularly organise and play in fives and sevens games.
