"Becoming an employee of Wood Mackenzie opened a world of opportunities for me, as well as an amazing benefits package."
After graduating with a degree in Business Economics in 2005, I started work as a Research Analyst with Hill & Associates, Inc., a leading coal energy consulting firm in the United States. I was able to utilize my degree by being on a team that worked on coal market economics forecasting models. The culture of Hill & Associates made it a terrific place to work. It was an intellectual environment with a work/life balance that focused on employee development. Since both companies have similar business environments, Hill & Associates was acquired by Wood Mackenzie in 2007.
Becoming an employee of Wood Mackenzie opened a world of opportunities for me, as well as an amazing benefits package. I learned a great deal about the other aspects of the energy business and our forecasting models improved through our increased access to information. I have had the opportunity to meet coal producers, electricity generators, transporters, politicians and many other groups related to the energy industry. Our knowledge leaders are the best in the business and they are always willing to answer questions. As a young researcher, I believe it is essential to work with great teachers in order to be successful.
The work here is far from being boring and repetitive. There are so many different aspects to the energy business and it is constantly changing. Some of the reasons why I really love my job are that I feel challenged and I feel as though I am able to make a big contribution to the work that we produce. Currently, I work on the forecasting models that feed information to our Long Term U.S. Thermal Coal Outlook and our U.S. Thermal Coal Quarterly Price Forecast. I have also published an article on a CO2 reduction program for the U.S. Northeast States and I have worked on several consulting projects for major U.S. companies in the coal energy business. With help from Wood Mackenzie, I will be attending graduate school this spring to work towards a dual degree in Business Administration and Environmental Management.
