"The learning curve is steep, and you’re never far away from the next assignment and the next big client question."
I joined WoodMac in March 2008, with a mostly technical background from working in the engineering contracting industry. I had focused on refinery technology and conceptual studies, making the WoodMac Downstream Consultancy an ideal progression towards a commercial focus.
In a typical week, I’ll work on two or three bespoke studies, each looking to find the answer to questions like “Should I build a refinery here?”, or “How much is my crude oil worth?”. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, such as the lenders’ advisor role for a high-profile grassroots export refinery; and for an oil producer to establish the value of new crude oil production and to develop a marketing strategy. Also, asset valuation for a $1B potential divestment for a global oil infrastructure owner; and a study for a major motor company for the future availability and pricing of gasoline and diesel road fuels. Plus, I’ve also developed an analysis of the global refining infrastructure to establish its technical capability and commercial inclination to supply bespoke fuel for power generation.
I enjoy working in a small team, but with the back-up of nearly 600 industry experts and the occasional multi-discipline project. The learning curve is steep, and you’re never far away from the next assignment and the next big client question. In the distant future, I’m looking forward to the impact of low-carbon energy sources – something we’ve already started thinking about.
