As a Sales & Account Manager I am responsible for new business development in 3 markets – Singapore, Philippines and India.

I’ve been with Wood Mackenzie for nearly two years. Having a Marketing background, I joined Wood Mackenzie’s Marketing team overseeing the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. Within a year, however, I expressed an interest to switch roles to gain experience in perhaps one of the most challenging functions within a corporate set-up – new business development.

A lack of sales experience coupled with industry knowledge largely limited to what I had accumulated in my 9 months at Wood Mackenzie meant that this move would not be easy. However, my suitability was assessed and I was given the opportunity to pursue this role.

One of Wood Mackenzie’s significant strengths is that it allows for internal mobility across roles and functions in a bid to find the right person for the right job. Every effort is made to create opportunities to enable individuals to achieve their potential. Not only was my move testament to this, but I have witnessed such moves across our offices globally – moves that allow people to embrace change and variety and, in the process, gain a diverse set of skills.

My role requires me to travel, meet with senior executives of companies to understand their needs, identify companies’ appetite for our offerings, pitch our offerings, manage client demands, and, equally importantly, manage people within Wood Mackenzie to ensure that I mobilise all the right resources to service my clients.

All this while keeping myself abreast of all our research offerings and their benefits to clients, staying up-to-speed on new developments in the ever-changing and complex energy industry and being in constant contact with my clients to understand their business, goals, plans and strategies in order to capture every opportunity for us to help them grow and succeed.

My role is indeed multifaceted – it involves salesmanship, relationship building, high-level networking, people management and strategic thinking, all of which is underpinned by tremendous intellectual stimulation and steep learning. I am loving every bit of it!
